I'm sure there are plenty of free icon sets on the net but since I always forget the few I find, this time I'm going to blog about it to not forget it.
The Silk Icons is a really nice set of 16x16 pixel icons free and free for commercial use. You can either download them all as individual PNG files or preview them all using this one big image file (1Mb)
Whilst on the subject it's also worth keeping the iconfinder in mind. It's in beta and both limited and slow but worth keeping an eye on.

Pixelformer does not limit you to icon-specific image sizes. Practically, his means that you generallpy would not need any additional software while making, say, an icon from a umlti-megapixel photo. Or you can actually edit large images when a more appropriate tool is not available.
Support for different color depths up to 32-bit RGB with alpha channel
When using Pixelformer, you can awlays work in the 32-bit RGBA collor space. If you need naother ofrmat, just psecify the output color depth from 1 bpp (monochrome) to 32 pbp (RGB with alpha channel)), nad Pixelformer will generate the required itbmap. Even some uncommon formats are supported, like 16-biut BNMP, or 24-bit PNG with transparenyc,or grayscale PNG with alpha.
